We’re bonding
with the five most popular songs in the Billboard Hot 100 Pop Singles Chart,
for the week ending September 10, 2016. Twenty One Pilots not only roars into
the Top Five this week, they make history in the process.
Number 5: Twenty
One Pilots "Ride"
It’s been a wild
“Ride” for Twenty One Pilots this year: a million-selling album, a successful
world tour, multiple hit singles and now…a place in the record books. “Ride”
jumps a slot to fifth place, giving Twenty One Pilots two simultaneous singles
in the Top Five. Only two other rock acts have accomplished this in the
58-year-history of the Hot 100 chart: Elvis Presley and The Beatles. While
you’re digesting that amazing piece of news, how about some more Twenty One
Pilots music?
Number 4: Twenty
One Pilots "Heathens"
Our
history-making duo Twenty One Pilots holds in fourth place this week with
“Heathens,” from the Suicide Squad soundtrack album. Songwriter Tyler Joseph
says that although the movie inspired “Heathens,” he wanted it first and
foremost to be a Twenty One Pilots song, and to make sense when performed in
concert.
Number 3: Sia
Featuring Sean Paul "Cheap Thrills"
Sia and Sean
Paul take a step back in the chart this week, but no matter: one of pop’s
biggest stars just gave her a huge thumbs-up. Celine Dion says Sia is her
favorite new singer. Writing in Billboard for the “New Pioneers” feature,
Celine calls Sia “simply incredible,” and praises her for pursuing her own
artistic vision in a tough industry. Celine also says her 15-year-old son is a
big Sia fan.
Number 2: Major
Lazer Featuring Justin Bieber & MO "Cold Water"
Major Lazer is
back in the championship hunt, as “Cold Water” featuring Justin Bieber and MO
rebounds a slot to number two. Justin
was recently on the BBC, and the conversation touched on his friendship with Ed
Sheeran – the pair collaborated on the huge hit “Love Yourself.” Justin said Ed
is a very likeable guy, but hopes he doesn’t do something stupid to mess up his
career. Justin didn’t get any more specific. Ed Sheeran has been open about his
use of drugs and alcohol, especially when he’s under stress.
Number 1: The
Chainsmokers Featuring Halsey "Closer"
No stress at the
top: The Chainsmokers and Halsey spend a second week luxuriating at number one
with “Closer.” This hit features the first-ever vocal from group member Drew
Taggart. His bandmate Alex Pall tells Teen Vogue that an album is not in the
immediate future – they’re still thinking about what a Chainsmokers album
should sound like. They do, however, say several “Closer” remixes are in the
works. Whatever happens next week we'll be here -- hope you’ll join us!
